The Verdict
Buy ClickUp if you want the most capability per pound and can live with the AI add-on being charged on every paid seat. Buy Monday if adoption is your bottleneck and you have three or more seats anyway — its AI credits come from an account-level pool, which is cheaper when only a few people use AI. Buy Asana if you want AI credits bundled into the plan price with no separate add-on line, and you'll pay roughly double ClickUp's entry price for that predictability.
Monday.com vs ClickUp vs Asana (2026): AI Features and Real Per-Seat Costs
Short answer: ClickUp for most small teams. Unlimited at $7 per seat per month on annual billing — roughly £5.15 — is the cheapest genuine entry point of the three, and there’s no seat minimum. Monday makes you buy three seats whether you have three people or not.
Buy Monday instead if you’ll have three or more seats anyway and only a few of those people will actually use AI. Monday’s AI credits come out of an account-level pool rather than being charged per seat, which is the single biggest cost difference between these three once AI enters the picture.
Buy Asana if you want one line on the invoice. AI Studio credits are bundled into the plan price rather than sold as an add-on. You pay more per seat for that — Starter is $10.99 against ClickUp’s $7 — but there’s no second bill that scales with headcount.
This is a research-based comparison built from the three vendors’ published pricing, independent pricing trackers and aggregated user reviews, cross-checked in September 2026. It is not a hands-on lab test, and nothing below is presented as a measured result from running these tools ourselves. Where sources disagree — and on ClickUp’s Brain add-on price they do — that’s flagged rather than averaged into a false single number.
Pricing (checked September 2026)

GBP figures use roughly $1 ≈ £0.74 (September 2026, GBP/USD around 1.35) and exclude VAT. All three bill in USD, so your sterling cost moves with the exchange rate on your card. Budget VAT on top of every figure here.
Correction from the March 2026 version of this page: the previous edition listed Monday Standard at £84 per user per month. That was wrong by roughly an order of magnitude — Monday Standard is $12 per seat per month on annual billing, about £8.85. Every cost calculation that flowed from that figure has been rebuilt. If you made a decision based on the old numbers, Monday is far cheaper than we implied.
How each one charges for AI — the part that actually decides it
This is where the three genuinely diverge, and it’s worth more than the base platform price on any team above about ten people.
Monday.com — account-level credit pool
Monday includes an AI credit allocation with each paid plan: reported as roughly 1,000 credits a month on Basic, 2,000 on Standard, 3,000 on Pro. Critically, that allowance is per account, not per seat. A twenty-person team on Standard draws from the same 2,000-credit pool as a three-person team on Standard.
Overage bills at about $0.01 per credit on annual plans, $0.0125 on monthly.
Two consequences fall out of that:
- If only a few people use AI, Monday is the cheapest of the three. You aren’t paying an AI surcharge on twenty seats to serve five users.
- If everyone uses AI heavily, Monday gets unpredictable. A shared pool that doesn’t grow with headcount means a large team burns through the bundle and lands on metered overage.
One more wrinkle: Monday changed its AI pricing model on 6 May 2026. Accounts created from that date buy AI credits as part of the purchase rather than receiving them with the plan. If you’re reading older comparisons — including the March edition of this page, which claimed 500 free credits per user — that per-user framing is out of date. Check what your specific account shows before budgeting.
ClickUp — per-seat add-on, charged on every paid seat
ClickUp Brain is an add-on at roughly $9 per user per month (about £6.65), layered on whatever plan you’re on. Sources disagree on the exact figure — reported at $5, $7, $9 and $12 in different places, likely reflecting legacy pricing and regional variation — so treat $9 as the planning number and confirm in your own billing screen.
The structural point matters more than the exact price: the add-on applies to the whole workspace, so it bills on every paid seat rather than on the people who use it. A ten-person team on Business at $12 that adds Brain pays $21 per seat, not $12.
There’s also a heavier tier — variously called Autopilot or “Everything AI” — at around $28 per user per month (about £20.70).
So: ClickUp Business at $12 plus Brain at $9 is $21 per seat, roughly £15.55. That’s the number to compare against Asana Advanced, not the $12 headline.
Asana — bundled credits, no separate AI line
Asana includes AI Studio credits in the plan: reported as roughly 50,000 credits a month on Starter, 75,000 on Advanced, 200,000 on Enterprise. There is no AI add-on to buy.
That’s the cleanest model of the three for budgeting. It’s also the one where you have least control — if your team exhausts the allowance, your lever is a tier upgrade rather than a metered top-up.
Watch the add-ons that aren’t AI, though: Timesheets and Budgets are charged separately at around $5.99 per user per month. Asana’s headline simplicity has a couple of asterisks.
What each platform’s AI actually does
Feature sets move fast and vendor marketing pages move faster. What follows is drawn from published documentation and vendor material as of September 2026 — read it as capability shape rather than a guarantee that any given feature is in your plan today.
Monday.com
- Sidekick — an assistant embedded in boards: summarising updates, drafting status reports, answering questions about board data, generating tasks from natural language.
- AI Blocks — discrete AI actions dropped into workflows (categorise, extract, summarise, translate) that consume credits per run.
- Agents — longer-running automations: meeting capture and action items, autonomous email handling, data analysis.
- Formula and docs assistance — writing board formulas in plain English, generating document text.
- Prompt to Board — describe a board and have it built.
Monday’s AI is the most aggressively marketed of the three. Aggregated reviews consistently rate it highest on interface polish and ease of adoption, which is a real advantage — an adopted tool beats a more capable unused one.
ClickUp
- ClickUp Brain — the central layer: workspace-wide semantic search, summarisation, task generation, writing assistance.
- SyncUps — built-in calls with transcription, AI-extracted action items and task creation from the notes.
- Autopilot Agents — no-code bots for repetitive work: status emails, status updates, standups, routine questions.
- Deep search — retrieval across workspace history, which becomes genuinely useful once you have a year of context in there.
ClickUp’s breadth is the selling point and also the criticism — reviews repeatedly flag a steeper learning curve and a busier interface than Asana or Monday.
Asana
- AI Studio — build workflows with AI steps without code, and deploy agents against them.
- Smart summaries and status — draft project status from activity, summarise threads.
- Workflow Builder with AI assistance — rule and trigger construction.
- Smart fields and answers — populate fields and query project data.
Asana’s AI is the most conservative of the three in ambition, which cuts both ways: fewer dramatic capabilities, and correspondingly fewer failure modes to manage.
Cost worked through, three team sizes
All annual billing, excluding VAT, at $1 ≈ £0.74.
Solo or two people
| Cost per month | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| ClickUp Unlimited, 1 seat | $7 (~£5.15) | No seat minimum |
| ClickUp Unlimited + Brain, 1 seat | $16 (~£11.85) | |
| Monday Basic, 3 seats forced | $27 (~£20) | You pay for three regardless |
| Asana Starter, 1 seat | $10.99 (~£8.15) | AI credits included |
| Asana Personal, 1 seat | £0 | Free up to 10 members, no AI Studio |
Verdict at this size: ClickUp, or Asana’s free Personal tier if you don’t need AI. Monday’s 3-seat minimum makes it roughly four times the price of ClickUp for one person, which is hard to justify whatever the interface looks like.
Five people
| Cost per month | Annual | |
|---|---|---|
| ClickUp Business (no AI) | $60 (~£44) | ~£530 |
| ClickUp Business + Brain on all 5 | $105 (~£78) | ~£935 |
| Monday Standard (AI pool included) | $60 (~£44) | ~£530 |
| Asana Starter | $54.95 (~£41) | ~£490 |
| Asana Advanced | $124.95 (~£92) | ~£1,110 |
Verdict at this size: it’s close, and AI usage decides it. Five people all using AI heavily: Monday Standard’s 2,000-credit pool will likely need topping up, but even with overage it’s probably cheaper than ClickUp’s $45-a-month AI surcharge. Five people where one or two use AI: Monday, clearly. If you’d rather not think about credits at all: Asana Starter.
Twenty people
| Cost per month | Annual | |
|---|---|---|
| ClickUp Business (no AI) | $240 (~£178) | ~£2,130 |
| ClickUp Business + Brain on all 20 | $420 (~£311) | ~£3,730 |
| Monday Standard (AI pool included) | $240 (~£178) | ~£2,130 |
| Asana Starter | $219.80 (~£163) | ~£1,950 |
| Asana Advanced | $499.80 (~£370) | ~£4,440 |
Verdict at this size: the AI billing model is worth more than the platform choice. ClickUp’s Brain add-on costs $180 a month whether five people use it or twenty, because it bills on every paid seat. Monday’s shared pool costs the same at twenty seats as at five. If AI adoption in your team is partial — and in most teams it is — that’s roughly a £1,600-a-year swing in Monday’s favour on identical base pricing.

FAQ
Is the AI worth paying extra for? On ClickUp it’s a genuine decision, because Brain is billed on every paid seat — roughly $9 a head whether that head uses it or not. On Monday and Asana the AI arrives with the plan, so the question is only which tier. If you’re unsure, start without ClickUp’s add-on and enable it once you know who’ll use it.
Which is cheapest for one person? ClickUp Unlimited at $7 a month, or Asana’s free Personal tier if you can do without AI Studio. Monday can’t compete below three seats because of its minimum.
Does Monday’s AI credit pool grow as I add seats? Based on published reporting, no — the allocation is tied to the plan tier rather than the seat count. That’s why Monday gets relatively cheaper on AI as the team grows and ClickUp gets relatively more expensive.
Can I move projects between these three later? Yes. All three have export and import paths, and third-party migration tools exist for the common routes. It isn’t painless — custom fields and automations rarely survive intact — but lock-in shouldn’t dominate the decision at these prices.
Which has the best meeting transcription? ClickUp is the only one of the three with it built natively, via SyncUps. Monday can do it through Agents. Asana expects you to bring a separate tool.
Why do published prices for ClickUp Brain vary so much? Legacy plan grandfathering, regional pricing and frequent repackaging. Reported figures range from $5 to $12 per seat. Treat $9 as the planning number and confirm in your own billing screen before committing.
The verdict
Choose ClickUp if you’re small, price-sensitive and want the most functionality per pound. Unlimited at $7 with no seat minimum is the best entry deal here. Just price the Brain add-on properly before you commit — at $9 on every paid seat it can nearly double your bill, and it isn’t optional per person.
Choose Monday.com if you have three or more seats anyway and you expect partial AI adoption. The account-level credit pool is the most economical AI model of the three for teams where a minority of people actually use it, and Monday’s adoption advantage is real rather than a consolation prize. The 3-seat minimum rules it out below that size.
Choose Asana if invoice predictability is worth roughly £3 a seat a month to you. Credits bundled into the plan, no AI add-on, and the cleanest interface of the three. Check whether you need Timesheets or Budgets first — those are separate line items at about $5.99 a seat.
For a UK small business of five on tight margins: ClickUp Business, and hold off on Brain until you know who’ll actually use it. For a twenty-person team with a handful of AI power users: Monday Standard, comfortably.
